would deter people from using the Railway in wet weather.
4. The position of the station opposite Mody
Road would necessitate what I consider rather a waste of valuable
land between the front of the station and Blackhead's Lot. This
square could not be put to any more useful purpose that a cab
stand or garden.
5. My suggestion is to enter into negotiations
for the purchase of what is generally known as Blackheal's :Lot.
This lot must be bought altogether. It would not be possible to buy only sufficient for a Station Building. The price would be a very large one say $575,000 for the ground and existing jetty and would not be justified unless the advantages gained were very
great.
8. The lot can be divided for this purpose :into
two almost equal parts. The inner one consisting of solid ground fronting on two wide roads Salisbury Road and Des Voeux Road gives an ideal site for a Station Building. The approach to the sea would be very short ani straight and could easily be made tinto a covered way at very little expense. The foundations also
would cost very little. These advantages alone would almost justify the expense of purchasing the whole lot.
7. Now however as regards the outer half of
the Marine Lot, I do not think that the disposal of this would
* give any trouble as a purchaser could easily be found at any time
at even a higher rate per square foot than the Railway would
have to pay for it.
8.
Before however deciding to sell this out-
-side half to a private owner, I have the honour to ask you to consider the following points as regards the provision to be maž
for the futi goods traffic.
